Dr Seth Tarrant

B BiomedSc (Hons) | MBBS | FRACS | FAOrthA

Seth was born and raised in Newcastle, attending the University of Newcastle where he completed medical science honours in novel stroke therapeutics under the mentorship of Professor Chris Levi and Professor Mike Calford. After completion of medical school at the University of Queensland, he returned to NSW to pursue his medical career. He completed his orthopaedic training in Newcastle in 2018.

In 2019, Seth moved to Switzerland travelling between Luzern, Zurich and Bern, operating with the pioneers of modern hip surgery. After working as a VMO at The Maitland Hospital, a second overseas training stint was undertaken at the Foothills Medical Centre in Calgary, Alberta in July 2020. This fellowship involved orthopaedic trauma and lower limb arthroplasty, with focus on the treatment of polytraumatised patients, complex intraarticular fractures, haemodynamically unstable pelvic injuries and reconstruction of the acetabulum.

Whilst overseas, Seth was appointed as the co-chair for the NSW Health Agency for Clinical Innovation hip fracture advisory panel. The aim of this working group is to identify variation in management within NSW hospitals and to provide evidence-based treatment recommendations. This was on the background of an extensive research profile on fragility fractures, international presentations and awards, and a PhD being completed under Prof Zsolt Balogh & Laureate Prof John Attia in the physiology and epidemiology of hip fracture, funded by a NSW Health scholarship. He is an active University of Newcastle examiner and lecturer.

Seth has now returned to Newcastle, and will be employed in the public and private hospital systems managing trauma and performing hip and knee arthroplasty. Seth will service the orthopaedic emergency department at Lake Macquarie Private Hospital in addition to elective operating.
